Cops swiping locked up bikes before thieves can steal them

The NYPD is now in the business of swiping locked up bicycles around Columbus Circle – but it’s all for a good cause!

The Post reported in May that pesky crooks had been stealing and renting out bikes to tourists at hourly rates which could sometimes lead to $ 25 dollar scores.

The illegal bike renting got so out of hand that back in July a group of cycle-snatching hawkers attempted to establish their dominance on Central Park by threatening the lives of employees belonging to the only contractor sanctioned in the city to legally rent out bicycles – Bike and Roll.

But it now appears that people with missing bikes should probably check the Midtown North Precinct because officers there have been seizing them in order to curb the recent thievery, police sources confirmed Friday.

Cops are apparently saying enough is enough and have begun cutting the locks off bikes around Columbus Circle and taking them down to the station as a preemptive measure of theft.

They are ultimately attempting to snatch up people’s bikes before the thieves have a chance to get their dirty paws on them first, according to police sources.

The NYPD may want to pump the breaks on the controversial measure, though.

In a case titled Bray v. City of New York, Cyclists with the group “Critical Mass bike ride” successfully sued the city in 2005 for cutting off their locks and confiscating their bikes.
