Mayor de Blasio plans to commit at least $ 1 billion over the next decade to “greening” city-owned buildings — and will pressure private landlords to make similar energy-efficiency improvements, according to a report.
The mayor will announce the pricey initiative, which aims to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, before the start of the UN Climate Summit on Tuesday, the New York Times reports.
The goal is an 80 percent drop in building emissions from 2005 levels, consistent with targets set for developed countries by the United Nations, the paper said.
Buildings are responsible for 75 percent of the city’s greenhouse emissions, according to Crain’s New York Business.
Precisely what the mayor’s new initiative will require of city landlords has yet to be detailed. But property owners are already being urged to use reflective paint on roofs and to comply with Bloomberg-era requirements phasing out dirty heating oil, Crain’s reports.
The $ 1 billion tax burden is a significant sum: the city’s fiscal 2015 budget is $ 75 billion.
