Citing terrorist activity overseas, Governor Andrew Cuomo on Friday announced the National Guard is being called in to help beef up security in the city and beyond.
Cuomo says while there is no specific threat the move is precautionary and that it will be a collaborative effort with authorities in both New York and New Jersey.
The governor says New Yorkers can expect to see more officers at airports, train stations, and well-known locations.
Cuomo says it comes amid a raised concern about terrorism overseas and an increased awareness of the group that calls itself the Islamic State.
The governor says the additional security is expected to cost tens of millions of dollars and will be included in next year’s budget.
Both Cuomo and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie are expected to make another announcement in coming days.
