Performers, Politicians to Memorialize Ruby Dee



NY1 will offer live coverage of a memorial for late actress and civil rights activist Ruby Dee with no login required. The memorial is scheduled to take place Saturday, September 20 at 11 a.m. at Riverside Church in Morningside Heights.


Alicia Keys, Audra McDonald, David Dinkins, Harry Belafonte, Wynton Marsalis and many other notable attendees are scheduled to participate.


Ruby Dee was raised in Harlem and got her start with American Negro Theater after graduating from Hunter High School and Hunter College. She skyrocketed to fame after appearing in 1961′s “A Raisin in the Sun.”


She later became the second oldest actor to receive an Oscar nomination for best supporting actress for her role in “American Gangster,” at the age of 83.


She fought social injustices alongside her equally famous husband and actor Ossie Davis until he passed away in 2005.
