Embattled Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez has withdrawn his lawsuits against Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig and the players union regarding his season-long suspension.
The notices of dismissal in the two lawsuits were filed Friday in a Manhattan federal court and could be a sign he will accept his 162-game suspension.
Rodriguez filed the suits in the aftermath of an arbitrator’s ruling on January 11.
Major League Baseball originally suspended him for 211 games last summer.
Rodriguez appealed that suspension, and it went to an arbitrator.
The arbitrator reduced Rodriguez’s suspension to the entire 2014 season and postseason, and Rodriguez sued two days later.
This all stems from the allegations from Major League Baseball that Rodriguez was involved with performance-enhancing drugs through the Biogenesis clinic in south Florida. Rodriguez has always denied those charges.
In response to the suit withdrawal, the MLB said, in part, “We believe that Mr. Rodriguez’s actions show his desire to return the focus to the play of our great game on the field and to all of the positive attributes and actions of his fellow Major League Players. We share that desire.”
The MLB Players Association added, “Alex Rodriguez has done the right thing by withdrawing his lawsuit. His decision to move forward is in everyone’s best interest.”
There has been no comment yet from Rodriguez and his attorney.
