Academy Award-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman was found dead in his New York City apartment on Sunday, according to the NYPD.
Hoffman’s body was discovered Sunday at his home in the West Village.
Police are still on the scene in Manhattan and are investigating. Sources tell NY1 that the cause of death was an apparent drug overdose.
Police responded to a 9-1-1 call just after 11:30 a.m. and sources say they found Hoffman dead on the bathroom floor with a needle in his arm.
He was alone in the apartment and there were no obvious signs of trauma.
Hoffman’s family released a statement to say they are devastated.
“We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone. This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers,” reads the statement.
