City Reaches Settlement With Man Who Served More Than 20 Years for Murder He Didn’t Commit

The city has reached a settlement with a Brooklyn man who was locked up for more than 20 years for a murder he didn’t commit.

City Comptroller Scott Stringer says David Ranta will receive $ 6.4 million to settle a wrongful conviction lawsuit.

Ranta was released from prison last year after a judge vacated his conviction in the 1990 murder of prominent Rabbi Chaskel Werzberger.

The Brooklyn District Attorney’s Office found that the investigation had been mishandled.

Stringer’s office said that the deal is in the best interests of all parties and “closes the door on a truly regrettable episode in our city’s history.”

Ranta’s attorney said that he is still pursuing a lawsuit against the state.
