2-year-old Marius was killed at the Copenhagen Zoo due to concerns about in-breeding.

An eleventh hour bid to stop a Danish zoo killing a young giraffe and feeding him to tigers has failed.

Despite thousands signing a petition to stop the killing, Copenhagen Zoo put down Marius, a 2-year-old giraffe, on Sunday.

A petition had been filed to prevent Marius’ killing and a British zoo even offered to take the animal.

Copenhagen said it has no choice over executing the giraffe because of European rules over in-breeding.

The young male was due to shot with a bolt gun, reports the BBC. The zoo would not use a lethal injection because that would contaminate the meat.

Marius’ body will be used for research and some of the meat will be given to the carnivores at the zoo.

But his plight touched thousands who launched a petition to save Marius.

Animal rights campaigners described the move as barbaric. At least one British zoo contacted the Copenhagen Zoo after learning of Marius’ plight and offered to take the animal, but to no avail.
