Mayor Bill de Blasio promised a “total reset” of the city’s approach to affordable housing at a press conference announcing a new chair of the city’s Housing Authority and three other leadership positions related to housing.
At the Lincoln Houses Senior Center in Manhattan, de Blasio said his new team of officials will take on New York’s affordability crisis by expanding access to affordable housing and upgrade the city’s public housing stock.
De Blasio announced longtime housing advocate Shola Olatoy will be the next chair of the New York City Housing Authority; Vicki Been will lead the Department of Housing Preservation & Development; and Gary Rodney will serve as the next president of the New York City Housing Development Corporation.
De Blasio pledged to repair the broken relationship between many of the city’s 600,000 tenants living in public housing and City Hall.
“It’s a total reset. We are starting from scratch,” the mayor said.
The 39-year-old Olatoye works at a non-profit that has built more than 44,000 units of affordable housing in the city, and Been is an NYU-trained lawyer who has long run the school’s Furman Center for Real Estate and Urban Policy.
“Shola has incredible experience and has hands on experience,” said de Blasio of Olatoy. “She is a respected coalition builder.”
The mayor also announced Cecil House will serve as NYCHA’s general manager, a position he has held for the last 18 months.
“I’m ready to roll up my sleeves with the rest of the team and I think we’re going to change a few things,” said House.
Rodney is currently Executive Vice President for Development of Omni New York LLC.
