Manhattan Man Pleads Guilty to Terror Charge in Pipe Bomb Plot

A Manhattan man who was accused of plotting to set off bombs in the city pleaded guilty Wednesday to a state terrorism charge.

According to Manhattan District Attorney Cy Vance Jr., Jose Pimentel, 29, attempted to build improvised explosive devices to detonate in Manhattan, intending to target United States military personnel and civilians.

Officials say Pimentel is an al-Qaeda sympathizer and was making a pipe bomb inside his Hamilton Heights apartment when they arrested him in 2011 following a year long investigation.

Investigators found pipes with drilled holes, incendiary powder, electronic circuits and nails to use as shrapnel.

Officials say he got the plans for the bomb from an al-Qaeda magazine and planned to detonate the device in Manhattan.

According to the DA, Pimentel also maintained his own website that contained links to bomb-making recipes and strongly advocated violence against United States citizens and government agencies, including police stations, political facilities, embassies, and airports.

He is scheduled to be sentenced on March 25.
