Jesus Montero — seen here during last season — has since packed on the pounds.

TAMPA — Jesus Montero, the top catching prospect the Yankees dealt for Michael Pineda in January 2012, reported to Mariners camp 40 pounds overweight, prompting Seattle GM Jack Zduriencik to all but write off the 24-year-old. “I have zero expectations for Jesus Montero,” Zduriencik told the Seattle Times. “Any expectations I had are gone.”

Montero had a decent rookie campaign for the Mariners in 2012, batting .260 with 15 home runs in 135 games, but he struggled in 29 games last season before being sent to the minors, where he injured his knee and was later suspended 50 games for his role in the Biogenesis scandal.

The Mariners sent Montero to Venezuela to play winter ball and make the transition to first base, and while he played well during the first few weeks, he suffered a severe laceration on his right hand in a car accident that required 32 stitches and ended his season.

“After winter ball,” Montero told the paper, “all I did was eat.”

“In the end, it is Jesus’ life,” Zduriencik said. “We’ll be there to assist any of these players, him included. But he will not be given anything.”
