Second U Penn student commits suicide in three weeks: report

Elvis Hatcher, a sophmore at the University of Pennsylvannia, committed suicide on Tuesday, according to the Ivy League’s student-led newspaper. His suicide is the second in three weeks.




A second University of Pennsylvania student has committed suicide within the last three weeks, according to the Ivy League school’s student-led newspaper.


College sophomore and math whiz Elvis Hatcher, 18, reportedly died on Tuesday, just days after 19-year-old freshman, Madison Holleran, jumped to her death from a Philadelphia parking garage on January 17.

Hatcher’s death marks the fourth Penn student death since winter break, according to the Daily Pennsylvanian.


University Communications did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

“He was … a brilliant person, and it’s terribly that he passed away,” Minji Kwak, who lived across the hall from Hatcher as a freshmen told the school paper.


Kwak described him as “probably one of the most interesting people” she had met at the university.

According to Hatcher’s LinkedIn profile, he served as vice president of finance for the Pi Lambda Phi fraternity and worked as an Instructional Technology Support Assistant at the Warton School of business.


He described his professional and academic interests as being in “computer science, mathematics, and mathematical finance (specifically, algorithmic trading).”


In 2012 he was named a National Merit Scholar while attending Miami Dade’s School for Advanced Studies where he received his Associate of Arts degree.


The prestigious recognition placed him among some of the nation’s top high school seniors who were awarded a scholarship.
