Some residents on the Upper West Side say that rats are overrunning their block, and with trash piling up because of the snow, they say the problem is getting worse. NY1′s Michael Herzenberg filed the following report.
The garbage piles up on 107th Street between Amsterdam and Broadway, like it does on many snowy blocks.
Residents want the Department of Sanitation to remove it, but this trash seems to move on its own.
The movement is actually from rats, and there are lots of them.
“Too many,” said one resident.
“They’re all over the place,” said another.
You might not be able to catch it because they’re so quick, but they’re digging for dinner and seem well fed.
They even seem to be playing hide and seek.
“They’re playing tag,” said one person. “People walking, they actually attack them.”
“They’re really bold, yeah,” said another “They’re not afraid at all.”
Residents say the infestation has been going on for months and comes from buildings under renovation, like 205 West 107th Street seen behind the trash, and another rat running at a NY1 photographer.
A complaint in May for garbage at the building attracting rats was dismissed by the Department of Buildings upon inspection.
Avra Maysoukas says she’s called 311, and the Department of Health responded with a letter saying that 205 has been issued a warning and violation, while other buildings on the blocks have failed inspections, and still others have baited. She wants more done.
“All they do is inspect and give violations. They don’t come in and get rid of the rats,” she said. “That’s what we need. We need somebody to just come in and get rid of the rats.”
The Department of Sanitation is scheduled to pick up trash here on Tuesday. Residents hope that that begins to alleviate the problem.
