Wintry Blast Leaves Behind Slushy Mess on City Streets

New Yorkers are facing yet another blast of winter as a mix of snow, sleet and freezing rain continue to cause slick road conditions and residual transit delays.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has declared a state of emergency for all of New York.

A winter storm warning is in effect for the city until 6 p.m. and the Sanitation Department has issued a snow alert.

City public schools are open today but all school field trips are cancelled.

Alternate side of the street parking rules remain suspended, but drivers will have to feed the meters.

Garbage and recycling pickup will be delayed because of the snow.

The city’s Office of Emergency Management has issued a Hazardous Travel Advisory and is urging drivers and pedestrians to use caution on city streets and roads.

Governor Cuomo says he has also directed the state Department of Transportation and Thruway Authority to move surplus salt supplies from state stockpiles to help replenish ones in the city.

The MTA says its Cold Weather Plan is in effect, meaning there are service changes on some subway lines.

Service on the 1, 2, 3, and 7 trains have resumed service with residual delays after signal problems earlier in the morning brought trains to a halt.

There were also reported delays on the 4, 5, 6, G, N and Q trains.

Bus service is running at 80 to 90 percent and some suspensions are possible.

Northeast Corridor and North Jersey Coastline branches of New Jersey Transit have resumed after being suspended due to heavy ice on overhead wires.

The Long Island Rail Road is reporting good service on most lines but there are service changes on Metro-North.

The weather is already causing cancellations on departures and arrivals at the three area airports.

Passengers should check with their individual carrier before heading out.
