Witness says girlfriend of Shawn Williams threw bottle before Dennzel Holder allegedly fired gun

The murder trial against Dennzel Holder, left, began on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2014 in Brooklyn Supreme Court. A fight over hair weaves ended up with one of the warring women’s boyfriend lying dead in a Brooklyn street, a jury heard Thursday. “If it was not such a tragic incident, we would probably laugh about it because it’s so pathetic,” assistant district attorney Edward Purce told the panel as the murder trial against Dennzel Holder, 21, got underway. WITNESSES DETAILED Tuesday how an innocuous comment about hair weaves and a leer followed by laughter escalated into a Brooklyn street brawl that left a man dead.

The August 2011 incident – which started with three teens chatting about hair extensions and ended with the shooting death of Shawn Williams, 28 – was described during the murder trial of Dennzel Holder, 21.

The victim’s girlfriend heard the hair remark that was made about Shatasia Meggett and “she looked at her up and down in, like, a nasty face,” Meggett’s former best friend said in Brooklyn Supreme Court.

“We were laughing at the look that she gave her,” said the witness, Marissa Lowe, 20.

The spurned stranger, Sheniqua Cunningham, started to argue, prompting Meggett to snide, “If we were laughing at you, you wouldn’t do anything,” Lowe testified.

Cunningham then hurled a bottle of cola champagne, narrowly missing her target, and a fight broke out.

“When she threw the bottle, it got Shatasia hyped,” Lowe said.

She and another witness claimed that Williams, who walked together with Cunningham, was “aggressive” and joined the verbal dispute, contradicting a prosecutor’s contention that he tried to play peacemaker.

The back and forth continued for four additional blocks down the Crown Heights shopping strip of Nostrand Ave. with Cunningham entering a store at one point.

Lowe said she surmised that their rival is getting a razor “because that’s how girls fight.”

There was no razor, but Meggett called her boyfriend, Holder, according the third young woman in their group, Faith Phillip.

By then, a new round of fighting erupted with Meggett taking on a pal of Cunningham who also showed up.

“They were kicking and fighting” as a crowd gathered to watch, Phillip, 20, recalled.

It was then that she saw Holder pump bullets at Williams, she testified.

“He shot the boy,” Phillip said matter-of-factly. “He was standing over the boy. The boy got shot again by him.”
