As arguably the most improved boxer in the entire 2014 tournament, Mark Hudson has worked tirelessly to ensure that the dejected feeling he had after last year’s Daily News Golden Gloves quarterfinals loss doesn’t repeat itself. On Friday night, the 165-pound novice racked up a personal best.
Hudson (New Bed-Stuy BC) advanced into the semifinals with a 2-1 decision over Luis Ortiz (Unattached) when the tournament came to St. Athanasius School in Brooklyn. Upon hearing the final bell, Hudson took hold of the top rope and shook it with all of the energy he had left and a smiled with a grin that beamed through his mouthpiece.
“This is where I came up short last year, isn’t it?” Hudson said after getting the decision. “You saw how I reacted, that’s what it meant to me.”
The victory didn’t come without bruises. Ortiz landed his share of hooks in the opening round, forcing Hudson to rethink his strategy and use more footwork in order to come out on top in the Applebee’s Bout of the Night.
“(The idea) was to find out what he wanted in the first round, do the opposite in the second and fight (my) heart out in the third,” the English-born boxer said.
After coming out flat in the first round of his quarterfinal, Jalil Regalas (Morris Park BC) got an extra slap and a stern talking to from cornerman and former light heavyweight champion Lou DelValle. As it turns out, the pep talk was the only thing Regalas needed to turn things around. The 165-pounder took over the latter two rounds, using the Empire City Casino Punch of the Night and a number of other shots to outduel Trent Malcolm (Starrett City BC) in a 2-1 decision.
“(DelValle) was asking what was wrong with me because I’m a way better fighter than I showed tonight,” Regalas said.
Nikolos Petrosyan (Bars BC) earned P.C. Richard and Son Boxer of the Night honors with an impressive 3-0 decision over the talented Travis Toledo (Pop’s Gym) in the 178-pound open division.
