It only took a moment Wednesday for the Port Authority’s board of commissioners to vote unanimously that henceforth, thousands of contract employees at the airports shall be paid higher wages and benefits. Then the audience cheered. When was the last time the Port Authority did something to make anyone cheer?
But done it is, and “as a condition for doing business at Port Authority facilities,” workers must soon get at least $ 9 an hour, and $ 10.10 by early 2015.
The PA board and staff should take a bow. But while this is a major victory for the forgotten people who keep the airports running, and for the Daily News Fight for Fair Pay Campaign, we’ll save the big celebration until paychecks actually get larger. No delays allowed.
