Council Leadership Calls for More Police Officers and Free Lunch for School Kids

The City Council released its first budget response under the leadership of Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito on Wednesday afternoon.

At the top of the list: getting more police officers on the street and free lunch for all public school kids.

The Council’s budget response is a time to lay out its priorities going into negotiations.

One of the Council’s top priorities is to add more than 1,000 police officers to the NYPD.

Mark-Viverito said the city needs more officers because of Vision Zero, an initiative launched by Mayor Bill de Blasio to cut down on traffic-related deaths.

Officials said adding the new officers would cost about $ 100 million.

Earlier this month, de Blasio said the NYPD was doing well with the resources that it had.

When asked about additional officers at a press conference on Wednesday morning, Police Commissioner Bratton said he would welcome more officers but was more concerned with raises for current officers.

The Council and the mayor must agree on a budget by the end of June.
