Golf Notes: Scott masters tiny space at Augusta

AUGUSTA — Adam Scott is the last man in, so he’s sharing a locker with Gary Player in the Champions Locker Room.

“He gets a lot of mail so there’s not a lot of room for myself in there but we make it work,” Scott said Tuesday. “My stuff’s kind of scattered around a bit on the floor.”

Scott’s theme at the Champions Dinner was Australian barbecue. He was disappointed he couldn’t arrange for meat pies during the cocktail hour. He did serve Moreton Bay bugs, “one of my favorite foods back home,” he said.

MCILROY MOCKS

Rory McIlroy was asked how many players in the field have a chance of winning this week. He threw out the number 70, discounting some past champions and first-timers.

“I’m just looking down the list here: Stewart Cink, Tim Clark, Ian Woosnam, no.”

The room roared with laughter. “Sorry, Woosie,” McIlroy said.

McIlroy also gently tweaked Patrick Reed for proclaiming himself one of the top five golfers in the world. McIlroy, a former No. 1, will play with Reed and Jordan Spieth the first two days.

“Yeah, there’s going to be no top five players in that group,” he said.

“No, actually, I played a few holes with Patrick today,” he quickly added. “It’s the first time I’ve ever spent any time with him. Seems like a nice guy.”

WHAT’S IN THE BAG?

Phil Mickelson loves to experiment with what clubs he carries but at Augusta, he has even more room for creativity.

“I am always working on another club, right? Why is that?” he asked. “It’s because I have two free clubs this week. For the past six or seven years I’ve played this tournament, I have not had a shot between 90 and 130 yards. So think about that. I have a 40-yard gap there. I take out my sand wedge and gap wedge because I don’t ever need them and it allows me to put in two special clubs.”

Mickelson was asked if that ever happens anywhere else.

“There’s some I need 16, but that’s not really an option,” he joked.

AIR ABOUT JORDAN

Jordan Spieth, who some feel has a great chance this week even though he’s a 20-year-old Masters rookie, said that so far, “it’s an experience like no other.

“It’s incredible. This is Heaven on Earth to us, and to me specifically,” he said. “This is a tournament I’ve grown up watching and always dreamt and still continue to dream of winning someday. Whether that’s a few days from now or years in the future, hopefully one day I can have that green jacket, but this is just an incredible atmosphere.”

Spieth arrived at Augusta Saturday and “got kind of the awe factor out.”

“It’s a golf course that I knew before I even got here,” he said. “I’ve watched it so much and studied it. I’m extremely excited for this week and I’m sure it will be an event that I’ll never forget, especially that first tee shot.”

TIGER TALK

Mickelson said it changes the vibe of the week with Tiger Woods missing his first Masters since 1994.

“Yeah, it’s disappointing,” he said. “It’s a weird feeling not having him here, isn’t it? He’s been such a mainstay in professional golf and in the majors. It’s awkward to not have him here. I hope he gets back soon.”

According to Mickelson, Rickie Fowler lit it up with a 30 on the front nine. Mickelson was the beneficiary. He was teamed with Fowler against Jason Dufner and Keegan Bradley.
