Groups Give Different Accounts After Horse Carriage Falls Over Outside Central Park

As the debate over the future of horse carriages in Central Park continues to simmer, two groups gave different accounts about what caused a carriage to turn over near Central Park and Fifth Avenue Wednesday.

The picture seen above was sent to NY1 by a tourist who said she saw it happen.

She said a bus was turning right towards Central Park and came close to the horse.

The witness said the horse got scared and tried to run, flipping the carriage and pinning it underneath.

However, a spokesperson from the horse and carriage association told NY1 a different story.

They said they saw the carriage’s back wheel get caught on the wheel of another carriage, tipping it over and knocking the horse to the ground.

They said the horse was driven home to his stable without injury.

The union representing the drivers said the veterinarian visited the horse and gave him a clean bill of health.

NYCLASS, the group advocating the ban on horses, said they’ll protest Thursday.
