On Sunday, April 6, 2014 at approximately 2145 hours, opposite of 3002 Surf Avenue, Sgt. Sheldon Arrindell and PO James Reser, members of Housing Impact Response Team, were in uniform, in a marked police vehicle on patrol within the confines of the 60 Precinct. They observed Michael Lewis, a 19 year-old male, holding a loaded, silver, Davis Industries, .38 Derringer firearm in his right hand at chest level. Lewis pointed the firearm at a 21 year-old male and fired the weapon at the victim who was standing approximately (8) feet away. The victim was not injured. Lewis then placed the firearm into his right pants pocket and walked towards a large crowd. Lewis was apprehended without incident and the firearm was recovered. One shell casing and one .38 round was recovered inside of the firearm. DCPI/DCPI Police recovered this Davis Industries .38-caliber Derringer pistol from the pocket of Michael Lewis, 19, following a shooting in Coney Island on Sunday night, according to the NYPD.

A young Brooklyn man was arrested with a loaded .38-caliber Derringer pistol in his pocket after cops saw him take aim at an adversary and fire an errant shot, police said Monday.

Michael Lewis, 19, doesn’t appear to have checked to see if the coast was clear before cops say he opened fire outside of a building on Surf Ave. in Coney Island late on Sunday night.

Sgt. Sheldon Arrindell and Officer James Reser, members of an NYPD Housing Impact Response Team, were on patrol in a marked police vehicle when they spotted Lewis carrying the Derringer in his right hand at chest level, cops said. A crowd had also gathered nearby.

Lewis was standing about eight feet away from his target when he pointed the silver piece at a 21-year-old man and pulled the trigger, police said.

The round missed. Lewis stuffed the weapon into his right pants pocket and tried to blend into the crowd.

But Arrindell and Resner kept their eyes on him and apprehended him without incident. They recovered the gun, with one round still inside, and a shell casing near where the shot was fired, police said.

Lewis, who lives in the building outside of which the shooting took place, was booked for attempted assault with intent to cause physical injury with a weapon, reckless endangerment and criminal possession of a weapon, cops said.

A police source said he has prior arrests for robbery and criminal possession of a weapon.
