Now that the state is funding universal pre-K in the city, Mayor Bill de Blasio is encouraging parents to sign up.
After state lawmakers approved $ 300 million funding for the city to expand its pre-k program over the next five years, de Blasio declared victory in the battle for universal pre-K.
The plan is to have 53,000 four-year-olds in full-day pre-K in the fall and 73,000 the following year. He made his pre-K pitch in Brooklyn Sunday at the Prospect Park Little League fields.
He signed baseballs, posed for pictured and spoke at the opening day ceremonies for Little League.
He urged the parents to sign up for the pre-K seats.
“As you know we won a great victory in Albany, we are now going to have full-day pre-K for every child in New York City,” he said. “It is going to take us two years to get there, but even this year there are going to be tens of thousands of new full-day pre-K seats.”
“So, parents, if you have a child who is going to be pre-K aged, application forms available here. You can get them from the Department of Education, you can get them all over the city. You have until April 23rd for the first wave of applications, there will be more after that,” he said.
