The National Transportation Safety Board is recommending stricter standards for ferries in city waterways following their report on the commuter ferry crash in Manhattan early last year.
The Seastreak Wall Street Ferry slammed into Pier 11 in Manhattan back in January of 2013.
The NTSB says despite being highly experienced, the boat’s captain made a mistake that caused him to momentarily lose control of the engines.
They say the incident may have been prevented with more thorough emergency training, changes to safety management systems, and redesigns to control panels.
The board calls on the Coast Guard to set stronger safety requirements for ferries.
More than 80 people were injured in last year’s incident, including one seriously.
The ferry’s ownership has since paid out more than $ 1 million in personal injury claims.
