TWC, Comcast Execs Make Case for Merger on Capitol Hill

Executives from NY1′s parent company Time Warner Cable and Comcast are appearing before a Senate Judiciary Committee today.

The committee has no formal role in approving the proposed merger of the country’s two largest cable companies, but it does play a role in shaping public opinion.

The ability to approve the merger lies with the Justice Department and the Federal Communications Commission.

In paperwork filed with the FCC on Tuesday, Comcast said the deal would be good for consumers and would not diminish the competition.

Consumer watchdogs who oppose the deal say it could give one company too much power.

“If you control access to broadband you can control the competition for high definition streaming video, for instance. That’s what the dispute between Comcast and Netflix was about. If you can control that many eyeballs then you can raise their cost, which is what they did to Netflix,” said Mark Cooper of the Consumer Federation of America.

Comcast has said it would not discriminate against Internet companies.
