New Yorkers March on Nigerian Consulate to Save School Girls

New Yorkers are marching on the Nigerian Consulate today to urge the government to step up efforts to find hundreds of kidnapped school girls.

Approximately 300 school girls were abducted three weeks ago by the terrorist organization Boko Haram.

Community members gathered near Mount Morris Park in Harlem Saturday morning, displaying signs saying “Bring Back Our Girls.”

They are scheduled to stop at the Nigerian Consulate at noon.

The American media and the American government have been criticized by many groups who say they were slow to take action. Organizers of this march hope they can make a difference.

“The pressure is on. I’m hopeful that these girls will be found, however injured they might be, however scared they might be, however terrorized they might be. The most important thing is to get these girls back into their homes,” says Miamah Richards of Kechie’s Project, a community group dedicated to the education of girls.

She went on to urge the Nigerian government and the international community to protect those children that are still vulnerable.

“We need to protect the ones that are still at home, the ones that still want to go to school, the ones that still believe that they have a right to education,” Richards said.

Those at the rally are urging others to join them at 44th Street and Fifth Avenue at noon, where the Nigerian consulate is located.
