A water main break Thursday on the Lower East Side is expected to impact the evening rush.
A stretch of Houston Street is closed as crews work to repair a 20-inch main that burst just before noon.
Cars are being diverted from the roadway between Allen and Essex streets.
A section of Houston Street buckled and there are issues with a concrete slab that fell onto a gas line.
As a result, water and gas service has been shut down to more than a dozen buildings, many of which also had to contend with flooding.
“Flooded the basement completely, a lot of damage down there, but as you can see we’re still open for business,” said Katz’s Deli Owner Jake Dell.
“The water receded in all the basements but the sinkhole started to form and we’re worried about the utilities in the street being affected,” said FDNY Battalion Chief Tom Haughney.
Crews say the pipe was originally installed in 1959.
They are hoping to complete repairs by Friday.
