A judge could rule Wednesday on how State University of New York Downstate should move forward on finding a new operator for Brooklyn’s Long Island College hospital.
Attorneys for the community groups hoping to keep LICH open filed a motion that would disqualify proposals that didn’t reach the minimum qualifications of a full service hospital.
If a judge grants that motion, it could prolong the legal battle over the hospital’s future.
That threat could spur the top bidders to enhance their proposals in the hopes of winning community support.
“A deal will be announced that again, meets the community’s needs in terms of their healthcare and provides a road map forward for their future of the campus at LICH,” says attorney Jim Walden.
SUNY Downstate is said to be close to closing a deal with Peebles Corporation after talks with the first top bidder, Brooklyn Health Partners, fell through.
SUNY can legally close LICH this Thursday.
The hospital already stopped accepting Fire Department ambulances.
