She can smile again.
Brave little Mikayla Capers beamed Saturday in her first public appearance since surviving a brutal Brooklyn elevator attack that killed her young pal and left her with 16 stab wounds.
The 7-year-old, in a pretty pink and purple dress and sandals, said she “is feeling good,” as she sat with relatives at Al Sharpton’s weekly National Action Network meeting in Harlem.
The family is hoping to get Mikayla settled into a new home by Sept. 1 so she can start the third grade away from the Boulevard Houses project, where there were no surveillance cameras to capture the savage attack on the girl and her 6-year-old pal, PJ Avitto.
Mikayla, with two visible scars on her chest, was bouncing to the music being played, smiling and hugging her great-grandmother, just a day after her alleged attacker was found mentally fit to stand trial.
Mikayla and PJ were riding the elevator of their East New York building on June 1 to go get ice cream when they encountered alleged “Brooklyn Ripper” Daniel St. Hubert, who allegedly killed PJ and viciously attacked Mikayla. St. Hubert is also accused of fatally stabbing 18-year-old Tanaya Grant-Copeland just a few days earlier.
