Annual Sand Sculpting Contest Kicks Off in Coney Island

The weather is great today for sculpting sandcastles at Coney Island.

The 24th annual sandcastle competition is taking place off the Coney Island Boardwalk and West 12th Street.

Both amateur and professional sculptors are taking part in the event.

All proceeds from the competition go to Hurricane Sandy recovery.

“The whole event is about recovery. We’re raising funds for Sandy folks who are still effected,” said Astella Development Corporation Executive Director Lisa Jones.

“We are gonna be having a couple of mermaids in hardhats with some power tools rebuilding Coney Island,” said professional sculptor Andy Gertler.

The winner of the amateur competition this afternoon will receive 500 dollars.
