City Council Speaker Shares HPV Diagnosis on Twitter

City Council Speaker Melissa Mark Viverito is sharing some very personal medical news.

The 45-year-old sent out a series of tweets on Sunday revealing that her gynecologist told her she has “high risk HPV,” or human papillomavirus.

She also pointed out that HPV can potentially lead to cervical cancer and said she will need to have a biopsy.

Mark Viverito said she decided to make her diagnosis public as a way to raise awareness of the virus.

In one her tweets she said, “Our health should never be compromised. Annual physicals have to be sacred. Yet our health care system doesn’t lend itself to this for many.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted infection in the country.

There is no treatment for the virus itself, but treatment is available for some of the health problems it can cause.
