The family of Eric Garner and others in the city rallied Saturday in support of those in Ferguson, Missouri after a teen was killed by police last week.
Reverend Al Sharpton said he will attend a rally for Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri tomorrow.
At today’s National Action Network meeting, he talked about the 18-year-old, who was killed by a police officer one week ago.
Sharpton says police in Ferguson are engaged in a smear campaign against Brown.
Yesterday, they released a video which they say shows Brown stealing a box of cigars from a convenience store shortly before he was killed.
They later clarified the officer who shot Brown didn’t know he was a robbery suspect.
Sharpton said the real problem behind the killing was the same kind of crackdown on low-level crimes that led to Eric Garner’s death on Staten Island last month.
He noted the officer initially approached Brown after noticing him walking in the street.
“How does a gun get in a discussion about why you all walking in the gutter rather than the sidewalk? This over-policing of low-level crimes has to be dealt with, which is why the federal government has to step in and establish federal guidelines,” Sharpton said.
Garner’s family was also at the rally, and had a message for those in Ferguson.
“Stay strong along with us. Let’s work this out together. The more we are together, and the more that we fight—we’ll get what we want,” said Eric Garner’s sister, Ellisha Flagg.
