Family members of Eric Garner made their first public comments since the medical examiner ruled his death a homicide.
The family joined Reverend Al Sharpton this morning, calling the ruling a step towards justice.
The ME ruled yesterday Garner died from compression to his neck and chest.
Video of Garner’s arrest last month shows an officer putting him in a choke hold while arresting him for allegedly selling individual cigarettes.
His wife says she hopes the ruling helps bring about changes to the NYPD.
“I want to thank the God above for giving us justice for my husband so that we could move forward and get this cop done with,” said Esaw Garner.
“This is not about the family overreacting, this is not about civil rights activists polarizing, this is about an illegal choke hold that caused a death. Let’s start and deal with the facts,” Sharpton said.
The president of the police union released a statement defending the officers involved the Garner case, saying in part, “We believe … that if he had not resisted the lawful order of the police officers placing him under arrest, this tragedy would not have occurred.”
