A meeting is held on Staten Island to discuss plans for what’s expected to be a massive march for justice for Eric Garner. NY1′s Amanda Farinacci filed the following report.
Justice for Eric garner, first and foremost.
That will be the mantra for the thousands who are expected to turn out August 23 to rally in support of the 43-year-old garner, who died while in police custody last month.
“We’re asking people to look at this march as a move forward. We came up with a hashtag tonight ‘#StatenIslandForward’ because we want to move forward and change what has been accepting policing practices from the past,” said City Councilwoman Debi Rose.
Garner died July 17 after resisting an arrest for allegedly selling loose cigarettes. Officer Daniel pantaleo was caught on this video placing garner in a chokehold.
Pantaleo has been placed on modified duty with his badge and gun taken away while the incident is investigated, and many believe he deserves criminal charges.
“How much time do we need to examine a video, to read a coroners report and to exact justice? So we’re coming to say that we’re not going to wait forever,” said Kirsten John Foy of the National Action Network.
A closed door community meeting took place Tuesday night to discuss the details.
The day will kick off with a ride over the Verrazano Bridge in buses that will bring protesters from all over.
Residents are asked to gather at Tompkinsville park, near where Garner died. Then they’ll walk the streets, including past the 120th Precinct and the District Attorney’s office.
The march route is designed to pass several city buses as well as the Staten Island ferry, to encourage those gathered to disperse as soon the march is over.
Borough Commander Edward Dellatore attended the meeting, as did Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr.
Organizers say any disruptions that take place on August 23 will dishonor her son’s memory and take away from the mission of getting justice for him.
