The federal probe into Bridgegate has so far turned up no smoking guns that show New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was behind the crippling lane closures on the George Washington Bridge last September, a report says.
The federal probe started nine months ago and has so far uncovered no evidence showing that Christie knew about or directed the bridge blockade, according to WNBC/News 4 New York.
Officials warned that the probe is not yet complete and Christie could still be implicated in the scandal.
The surprise closure of several entrance lanes on the bridge caused major traffic tie-ups in Fort Lee, NJ.
The move was suspected to be an act of political retribution against Fort Lee Mayor Mark Sokolich, who failed to endorse Christie’s bid for re-election.
Christie, a prospective 2016 GOP presidential candidate, was damaged politically when e-mails surfaced showing that an aide ordered the lane closures in a bid to hurt Sokolich.
“Time for some traffic problems in Fort Lee,” Christie’s then-deputy chief of staff, Bridget Anne Kelly, wrote to an ally at the Port Authority, which operates the bridge.
“Got it,” replied David Wildstein, who has known Christie since high school.
Christie has denied any advance knowledge of the lane-closure scheme.
