Police Looking for 15-Year-Old With Special Needs Missing Since Monday

Police need help finding a 15-year-old girl with special needs last seen leaving her school on Monday.

Nashaly Perez was last seen at lunchtime at P.S. 371 in Sunset Park.

Her mother said she went to pick her up at 1 p.m. Monday and was told she was not there.

Nashaly is 15 years old, but her family says she has the comprehension abilities of only a 7-year-old.

She is 5 feet, 3 inches tall and weighs 120 pounds.

She was last seen wearing a white bandanna, red blouse, black jeans, red and black sneakers.

Her family says she does not have autism, but they say in addition to her communication skills being below her age, she has a mood disorder and she is on daily medication.

Nashaly’s mother, Sandra Rodriguez, said she was supposed to have full-time paraprofessional supervision.

“I’m very worried about her,” Rodriguez said through an interpreter. “She needs her medication.”

“She’s never been out of our house without supervision of her mother or myself,” said William Bley, the boyfriend of Nashaly’s mother. “We are parents that, we don’t let our kid running around like that. We are very aware how dangerous it could be, the neighborhood.”

Schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña issued a statement that reads, “I am deeply concerned about this student and we have school support on site as we work with the NYPD to investigate this matter.”

“Obviously, very upset,” Fariña said. “This is not something I want to see under my watch, and it’s something that we’re taking extremely seriously, and whatever the investigation is, we will follow up, and in the sternest way possible.”

The City Council passed “Avonte’s Law,” named after Avonte Oquendo, a teen with autism who ran away from his school in October 2013 and was found dead in the East River in January. The law called for the Department of Education to evaluate the need for cameras at schools and come up with a timeline for installing them.

NY1 is told that the principal in this case has been reassigned.
