Mayor Bill de Blasio is allocating millions of dollars to fix an increased number of potholes on city streets in response to the record setting winter.
The mayor made the announcement in Maspeth where he took matters into his own hands by filling in a pothole alongside city Department of Transportation employees.
De Blasio presented a six-step plan to repair the wear and tear on the roads, including weekly pothole blitzes and targeted citywide repaving.
An extra $ 7.3 million will go to the DOT for road repairs.
“This winter has really challenged the men and women of the DOT. They have had extraordinary problems thrown at them. Every day has been unpredictable. What has been absolutely predictable, however, is they have to go to work, they have to fill potholes on a schedule such as we’ve never seen before,” de Blasio said.
This winter has been the seventh snowiest on record for the city.
So far, the DOT has filled a record more than 113,000 potholes this year.
