NTSB: Cameras Needed to Record Metro-North Engineers’ Actions

The National Transportation Safety Board on Tuesday handed out some recommendations in response to last year’s deadly Metro-North train derailment in the Bronx.

The agency is calling for inward and outward facing audio and image recorders to be installed inside the cab that drives the train.

The board says those recorders would give them crucial insight into the moments leading up to an accident like the one on the Hudson line back on December 1.

Four people were killed and dozens hurt when a train jumped the tracks in Spuyten Duyvil.

The NTSB also suggests Metro-North install more speed signs that indicate temporary and permanent speed restrictions.

Investigators say Metro-North has signs posted for temporary speed restrictions throughout the railway but not in the area of the accident.

Senator Charles Schumer released a statement saying, “With these new recommendations, NTSB has confirmed what we’ve been saying all along – that inward and outward facing cameras will greatly improve safety on Metro North and all other railroads. This report should spur the Federal Rail Administration to move quickly on making these cameras mandatory, and prompt Metro North to install them ASAP – and not wait until the feds require them to do so.”
