A firefighter visited a mother and her baby in the hospital Thursday a day after a dramatic delivery.
Lasema Smith and Firefighter Joseph Hauser reunited at Jacobi Medical Center.
Hauser was among the firefighters who responded to a call of a mother in labor Wednesday at a home in the Morris Park section of the Bronx.
When they arrived, they say the baby was in a breech position, or feet first.
Hauser, a former EMT, had never delivered a baby on his own, but his quick thinking and medical training took over, and he safely delivered a baby boy at the home.
“Normally in that situation, you do not deliver. You transfer to the hospital,” Hauser said. “But she was having contractions and had to push, and I had to assist the baby as it was coming out, and it was a great delivery. And after that happened, it was awesome.”
“Yeah, I wasn’t expecting to see my baby feet first in a sack and the head still inside,” said Lasena Smith, the baby’s mother. “So yeah, it was pretty hectic for me.”
This is Smith’s third child. She said it was by far her hardest delivery.
She named the baby Tyrell, after his father, but his middle name is Lucky.
