Nine people were injured, three critically, when a speeding SUV slammed into a wall on the New England Thruway in the Bronx Friday morning, police said.
The northbound Cadillac Escalade apparently jumped a median and slammed into the wall as it was exiting the Thruway at Conner St. near Co-op City shortly after 5 a.m., police said.
Firefighters used four high-power cutting devices, known as Hurst tools, to free several of the occupants from the crumpled mass of smoking metal, authorities said.
All nine victims were taken to Jacobi Medical Center, where three were listed in critical condition and six were in serious condition, police said.
“Someone yelled, ‘There’s been an accident.’ There were people running over to help,” said a gas station attendant who works across the street from the exit. He declined to give his name.
Police were investigating the cause of the crash.
