Pre-K Funds in State Budget Seen as Victory, Mayor Says

Mayor Bill de Blasio is taking a victory lap one day after Albany passed the budget allocating money to fund his universal pre-K initiative.

While it may not be funded by a tax on the rich, the city will still receive $ 300 million a year over a five-year period.

Sitting down for a one-on-one interview with NY1 political anchor Errol Louis earlier in the day, the mayor was asked if he will also able to implement the other part of his plan, after school programs for middle schools.

“Albany has a five-year plan for after school. Again, so central to this for us was a believable long term plan that we could really work with. And what I was worried about was that Albany would do something very temporary. On both pre-K and after school there’s a five-year commitment. We’re going to get a substantial amount of that after school money,” De Blasio said.

Another issue plaguing the mayor is the city’s homelessness problem. One of the last minute negotiations between the city and Albany was to help bring money to bring people out of homeless shelters and into permanent housing.

The full interview can be seen tonight on “Inside City Hall” at 7 and 10 p.m.
