Teen Questioned in Coney Island Fire That Injured Two NYPD Officers

Police in Brooklyn are questioning a teenager about a suspicious fire Sunday that left two city police officers critically hurt.

Flames broke out in a high-rise building on Surf Avenue in Coney Island shortly before 12:30 p.m.

Investigators say 38-year-old NYPD Officer Dennis Guerra and 36-year-old Officer Rosa Rodriguez were answering a 911 call about the fire when they were overcome by smoke on the 13th floor.

“Fire Department personnel arrived at the building and made their way up to the 13th floor where they located both police officers, unconscious and unresponsive, on the hallway floor. The responding firefighters pulled both police officers back into the elevator and brought them downstairs to the main entrance, where EMS personnel treated the officers in front of the Coney Island Housing Development,” said Police Commissioner William Bratton.

“It’s incredibly difficult work that these men and women do. I can say this on behalf of all New Yorkers, our hearts go out to these families. We will stand by them,” said Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The officers are being treated for carbon monoxide poisoning and smoke inhalation and remain in critical condition.

Investigators say the flames started on a mattress in a hallway, but it’s still not clear what led to the fire.
