Broadway icon Elaine Stritch has died at the age of 89.
Stritch began her stage career back in the 1940s and performed well into her 80s at a cabaret show in the Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side.
She lived in the famed hotel for many years and starred in dozens of musicals, comedies and dramas on Broadway.
Stritch was nominated for five Tony awards and finally took one home in 2002 for her one-woman show “Elaine Stritch: At Liberty.”
She moved out of New York last year to Birmingham, Michigan.
A friend told the New York Times Stritch died in her home there.
In honor of Stritch, Broadway theaters will dim their lights Friday at 7:45 p.m.
