Contract talks resumed today between the MTA and Long Island Rail Road unions, but the two sides could not come to an agreement.
Now, MTA chairman and CEO Thomas Prendergast is going to Washington to ask Congress to intervene.
Railroad workers are threatening to walk off the job at midnight on July 20 if a deal isn’t reached.
They’ve been working without a contract since 2010.
A walkout would affect more than 300,000 daily riders.
The MTA’s most recent offer called for 17 percent raises spread across seven years, but also asked for concessions on health care and pensions.
The unions want more.
The MTA is working on a strike contingency plan involving shuttle buses and extra HOV lanes on the Long Island Expressway.
