Thousands are expected to attend today’s funeral on Staten Island for a lieutenant killed while fighting a high-rise fire in Brooklyn last week.
Firefighters paid their respects to 40-year-old Gordon Matthew Ambelas during wakes held on Tuesday and Wednesday.
His funeral will take place at St. Clare’s Church in Great Kills later this morning.
Lieutenant Ambelas passed away last weekend while battling flames inside a cluttered 19th floor apartment in Williamsburg.
The medical examiner says he died from smoke inhalation and burns.
Officials say the fire was caused by a pinched electrical cord.
Ambelas had been with the fire department for 14 years, and was promoted to Lieutenant just 10 months ago.
He leaves behind a wife and two young daughters.
