Police are looking for a woman seen by passersby abandoning a baby on a subway platform.
Police say at around noon Monday transit officers were approached by a woman who said she saw another woman between 20 and 30 years old pushing a stroller on a northbound 1 train—and then onto the platform at Columbus Circle.
The woman apparently stayed on the train.
“I think the mother has to hold on very tight to the carriage. That’s the first thing and unfortunately, people don’t help or nobody helps you keep the door open, but don’t let go, because if her body be in the way, then this wouldn’t have happened,” said one rider who was also a mother.
“That’s crazy. It’s scary what people do here on the subway,” another rider said.
“That’s kind of deep. Now, is it a criminal offense? Was she under the right influence? Is she under some kind of medication? Is she under stress? Did she do it on purpose or did she do it on accident? It’s hard to say,” another rider said.
The baby was taken to Saint Luke’s hospital in stable condition.
