Sources tell NY1 that four EMS workers who responded during an arrest that resulted in the death of a Staten Island man are being placed on modified duty.
Sources say the workers are from Richmond University Medical Center.
The news comes after NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo had his gun and badge taken from him following the incident.
Pantaleo can be seen in plainclothes in video obtained by the Daily News using what appears to be a chokehold on Eric Garner, who police say was being arrested for selling cigarettes illegally.
He can be heard in the video telling police he can’t breathe.
Meanwhile, the Rev. Al Sharpton on Sunday held a prayer service at Riverside Church for the Staten Island man who died while officers attempted to arrest him on Thursday.
In his sermon, Sharpton said he wants faith-based leaders to take an active role in this situation and say what is and is not acceptable in terms of police conduct.
On Saturday, Sharpton led two rallies demanding answers for Garner’s death.
After Sunday sermon, Sharpton referenced a second cellphone video, which covers the seven minutes that Garner is on the ground.
In the video, Garner is seen lying on the ground motionless until EMS comes and places him on a stretcher.
“Now, with this new tape out, where the police stood around doing nothing, letting a man lay there lifeless, the commissioner ought to deal with those police as well, and those police ought to be investigated as well,” Sharpton said. “The prosecutors now have to throw the pressure. What is Donovan going to do? What is the federal government going to do? Can we trust the Staten Island DA and grand jury, or do we have to do what we did with Abner Louima, go federal? That’s what the family’s discussing now.”
Sharpton said while he’s happy the police commissioner placed one of the officers involved on modified duty, meaning that his gun and badge were taken away, he’d like to see all the officers investigated.
The medical examiner says no determination has been made as to the cause and manner of Garner’s death.
Another officer involved has also been placed on desk duty.
Mayor Bill de Blasio released a statement saying he’s getting briefings regarding the case from his vacation in Italy.
Sharpton said the family is now planning for Garner’s funeral, which will take place Wednesday night in Brooklyn.
