Police Arrest Mother of Baby Left on Subway Platform

The mother of a baby girl left alone on a Manhattan subway platform yesterday is now under arrest.

Investigators say a good samaritan recognized the woman seen pushing the child in a stroller in surveillance video.

The good samaritan saw the mother walking near 71st Street and Broadway just after midnight and told an officer, who brought the woman in for questioning.

The baby, who is about six or seven months old, was found on the Bronx bound 1 train platform of the Columbus Circle station just before noon Monday.

A witness told police that a woman in her 20s pushed the stroller off a northbound 1 train onto the platform but stayed on the train herself.

“I can’t even imagine, I don’t even know what to say. I can’t even imagine what she would have been thinking at that moment to do that,” said one subway rider.

“I think it just shows how much psychological care is important you know because obviously someone who is health would not do that,” said another subway rider.

They have not yet released the baby’s name, but they say she is now in the care of the Administration for Children’s Services.
