Hundreds of additional officers are hitting city streets in an effort to crack down on summer crime.
Police tell NY1 between 350 and 400 officers, who have been on desk jobs or special assignment, will be placed back on patrol for 90 days.
The officers will be sent to 10 precincts and five housing police services areas where many of this years shootings have occurred.
Most of the extra officers will be heading to Brooklyn and the Bronx, with about 100 of those patrolling housing developments.
Residents who spoke with NY1 in the Edenwald section of the Bronx say they’re looking forward to the additional surveillance, and hope it will become a permanent change.
“My sister was up from Virginia a couple of weeks ago, she heard two groups of kids arguing, she took the kids upstairs and next minute, you know, she heard shots and I think a 16-year-old got killed. So something’s gotta be done,” said one resident.
“I’m very concerned, I don’t even let me kids come outside and play over here. I’d prefer the officers to be hired permanently, not for them to leave,” said another resident.
Although shootings are up from last year, 2014 still has the second fewest number of shooting incidents in the last 20 years.
