Mayor Joining Family on 10-Day Italy Vacation

The city’s first family is setting off on their first vacation since Mayor Bill de Blasio took office.

The de Blasios are heading to Italy next Friday for a 10-day vacation.

The mayor, who has been in office for just over seven months, will pay for his family’s portion of the trip.

City money will be used to send his police security detail, press secretary and two aides along with them.

The trip will include visits to Rome, Venice, and Naples.

The mayor plans to meet with local officials while abroad.

This trip will be the longest vacation taken by a mayor in recent years.

Former mayors Michael Bloomberg, Ed Koch, and Rudy Giuliani preferred weekend trips to prolonged vacations.

The de Blasios last visited Italy in 2010.

First Lady Chirlane McRae is already blogging about the trip and has posted pictures, explaining that it’s important to her and the mayor that their children – Chiara and Dante – know where they come from.

She said they will enjoy some much-needed family time while they are away.

But they will also make it a point to thank the mayor’s relatives and local residents who supported them throughout the election.
