Mayor Bill de Blaiso on Tuesday unveiled how the city will spend funds put aside to fight crime in city housing projects.
At the Wagner Houses in East Harlem, the mayor laid out the plan for spending $ 210 million allocated by the city’s new budget.
He will add 700 new police officers and 150 new light towers, which are supposed to go up later this week.
The city aims to remove 10 miles of “sidewalk sheds” which cover sidewalks during construction projects by next spring.
A number of community centers will also keep their doors open for six extra hours each day.
De Blasio says the money is focused on 15 NYCHA complexes where 20 percent of housing project violence happens.
“The word today is investment. We are making investments in our public housing. Investments that should have been made long ago but we’re making them now. No time like the present. And we believe the challenges that face public housing need to be addressed aggressively,” De Blasio said.
Shootings inside public housing complexes have gone up 31 percent since the start of this year.
The mayor says he sees no connection between that and the drop in the NYPD’s use of stop-and-frisk.
